SHAKABABO CONSERVANCY ASSOCIATIO (SCA) Kenya ORGANIZATION PROFILE WHO WE ARE

Shakababo conservancy association (SCA) is a non-profit making organization registered to operate in the coast with a national scope under the NGO Act of 1990 Non-governmental organization. SCA works as an implementing agency through partnership with other development organization in Kenya with all development donations received being taxed exempt. As a non-profit making organization, SCA is very dependent on donations from development partners, organizations, the Tana River county government, the government of Kenya support ministries and individual donors to be able to render the services to the deserving poor wetland communities along the Tana River and other parts of north coast Kenya. Quality is the key concept of SCA as a non-profit making organization. We strive to help wetland communities to overcome the burdens of poverty, environmental degradation, natural resources conflicts to become self sustaining and contributing members of their respective communities.

CORE VALUES : The core values of SCA are the fundamental principles that define the organization’s actions, and are therefore defined as follows.

COMMITTMENT TO THE POOR COMMUNITIES We shall Endeavour to assist the wetland communities to relieve their suffering and transform their living conditions. The inhabitants in the eco system shall in this endeavor be active participants and not passive recipients.

WE ARE RESPONSIVE The organization is responsive in a sense where deep seated and often complex economical and social deprivation, calls for long term sustainable development initiatives. We are responsive to new ideas, opportunities and encourage innovation, creativity and flexibility in order to grow in understanding and acquisition of skills.

IMPARTIAL All people are equal regardless of racial, ethnicity, religion, gender, physical impairment, political affiliation or countries of their origin.

PEOPLE ARE VALUABLE : Our first priority is people not money, structure, system and other institutional machinery. Our objectives are pushed in a manner that respects the dignity, uniqueness and intrinsic worth of every person – the wetland community, the donors, our staff, their families and the society at large. SCA appreciates the richness diversity in human personality, culture and contribution. All and above we encourage professional contribution, personal initiative, ideas and spiritual development of our members.

TRANSPARENCY : All the resources given to us by the donors, friends, governments, religious groups and philanthropists are not for personal but for the designated purposes to assist develop the poor wetland communities. The intended resources will be well managed (or are well managed) in a diligent manner that brings the needed benefits to the beneficiaries. We embrace openness in our dealings with donors, communities, governments, and the general public and with each other.

WE EMBRACE PARTNERSHIP: We acknowledge the obligation of joint participation, shared goals and mutual accountability in pursuit of our objectives. We are partners with the wetland communities, governments and donors in our project implementations. We shall, and do maintain a cooperative stand and a spirit of oneness towards other humanitarian organizations. We are willing to receive and consider honest feedback about our activities. Our partnership transcends legal, structural and cultural diversity.

COMMITMENT TO THE CORE VALUES

Our core values are fundamental, and indispensable, that no document can substitute them. These are attitudes, decisions, and actions that make up the fabrics of our lines and work. These core values are our organization basis in decision making, planning, organizing and implementing our activities, hence they must be lived and honored.

WHAT WE ARE COMMITTED TO DO

1 Historically or traditionally, it is understood that political and military issues are concepts of conflict, but we realize that economic and social threats including poverty and environmental degradation are significant contributing factors for conflict. So we are committed to building blocks for peace and security for all river lake communities and social security, anchored in sustainable development. This would allow us to address all the big issues – poverty, climate and environmental stability.

2 We are committed to improve the livelihood of the wetland community, make a sustainable living that can make them cope with stress, shocks and enhance their capabilities and assets both now and in future, while not undermining the natural resources base.

3 Improving water accessibility to communities living around rivers, lakes where clean water is a need also assist in the rehabilitation of dyeing natural water sources. This may include the construction of underground tanks and dams, to capture rain water and make it available to them to be used during dry seasons.

4 Assisting small scale farmers to improve food security situation in livestock and crop farming through training provision of certified seeds, and upgrading of indigenous livestock breeds.

5 Buying produce from hard working farmers during harvest time at a motivating price, treat and store it locally in the best way possible then make in available for them at an affordable price and in different forms during planting season.

6 Involving ourselves in endeavors to minimize vulnerability to natural hazards and climate change through the management of key natural resources and the introduction of appropriate technologies.

7 We put great emphasis to the needs of the river-lake communities and aspects of their lives and means of living at the centre of development and our works, while maintaining the sustainability of natural resources for present and future generations

. 8 We seek to identify quick fielding revenue measures and priority expenditures aimed at supporting the economic recovery of the water-side poor.

9 Advocate for corporate efforts to plan and manage shared natural resources among communities in an effort to promote communication and interaction between adversaries or potential adversaries, thereby transforming insecurities and establishing mutually recognized rights and expectations.

10 To establish a community based monitoring and patrolling system in the eco-system.

11 To control illegal extraction of natural resources, wildlife and marine resource poaching.

12 To empower community members and enhance a source of resource ownership, control and management.

13 To promote local conservation based enterprises like fishing, crop farming, agro forestry, crocodile farming, and sale of other marine products.

14 To promote community involvement in forest and vegetative conservation like Tree planting and discourage deforestation.

15 To promote community involvement in tourism activities as an incentive to promote Shakababo ecosystem and its natural state.

16 To create and maintain forested buffer zones which will separate watering points from farms, and cattle grazing corridors from reserved areas to manage conflict.

17 Introduce and maintain a food chain around the ecosystem that will not include human beings and or their produce and livestock.

18 Control water flow in and out of the lakes lying along the meanders of River Tana.

19 Control water pollution, encroachment, poaching , fishing, ,soil erosion and livestock grazing

20 Conserve critical feeding grounds for fish, wildlife and water birds.

21 Identified problems faced by the eco-system and find solution through community, donor and stakeholder participation.

22 Empower women, youth and the disabled to be able to actively participate in the development agenda of our nation’s vision 2030. As an organization, we uphold the principle of collective participation where members of the community must be involved entirely in the community programmes. We need them to participate because the success of these programmes will require their involvement.

WHERE DO WE INTEND TO START WORKING

We are based in Tarasaa Division, Tana Delta District, and intent to work in the following Districts in the coast region:

1 Tana Delta District

2 Tana River District

3 Lamu West District

4 Malindi District We envision working with the wetland communities of Tana River County and the coast region, before going national.

ORGANIZATION MANAGEMENT SCA is an upcoming organization with clearly stipulated policies and roles of employees. Currently, the chief executive officer and his founder members are managing the affairs of the organization. The organization is addressing problems of poor wetland communities through interactions in the areas of need as development agents in various parts of the region.
